Every once in a while, an RV Builder out there will have a brilliant epiphany or will share their building experiences that did or did not turn well. I decided to save this info into a searchable database. Here are the email groups that I am a member of: RV Email Lists - Matronics, Rivet Bangers - RV Information Exchange, Yahoo - RV7A & 9A, Van's Air Force, Website and Forum. Feel free to look around.

Cowl Mounting - View Thread
Being new to the RV-6A and especially new to a home built with all the variances in building sure has its frustration points. I am missing 6 locking screws that hold the cowling on. There is only one visible marking on the screw a '0'. Now, I don't know the manufacture. I would call them CAMLOCKS for lack of a better term. The best I can describe them is: A floating base that is riveted to the fuselage, it looks like a very large Floating Nut plate. About 1 1/4" long across the plate and about 1" wide. The floating part is ROUND with a square flange on one end. Inside the floating part is a threaded barrel (gripping part) that allows the gripping part to be adjusted up and down for tightness (draw length). There is a spring steel retainer that wraps around the floating part's round diameter and has a 90 deg bend which goes into the threaded barrel to lock the threaded barrel (gripping part) in place. WOW! That is a long expiation, I hope it is clear and someone can HELP with the NAME and Who Sells Them?

That's a jam up description of a Skybolt product. www.skybolt.com I used them on the cowl and they work real good.

Loctite - permanent or removeable - View Thread
I am about to order some Loctite from Aircraft Spruce and am wondering whether to get the permanent or removeable type. I'd rather only have to purchase one since it is expensive. Installing the flap rod end bearings is what has gotten me to deal with this. Comments? Thanks!

Loctite - permanent or removeable - RE: - View Thread
Chemical reaction is what I've heard, softens the nylon material. I guess that's why they want us to use torque seal.

Loctite - permanent or removeable - RE: - View Thread
Why not on nylocks?

Loctite - permanent or removeable - RE: - View Thread
The 'hazzardous shipping' charges from ACS and others is more than the product. Pick it up at the local Napa store or AutoZone, etc.

Loctite - permanent or removeable - RE: - View Thread
Loctite can be purchased at any parts store. Use the BLUE one (#242) and avoid the RED (#271). Don't use it on nylocks.

Loctite - permanent or removeable - RE: - View Thread
Agree, don't get the permanent! Also, don't make a special order just for torque seal, get some "Orange" in the aviation fingernail polish dept at Wally's..... Torque seal is not really a "sealer", it's inspectors laquer, you can see if is broken.

Loctite - permanent or removeable - RE: - View Thread
A little dab will do you with a medium set Loctite. You can pick it up at Walmart or any auto parts store. Permanent setting is not good and not required. Also, a small tube of torque seal would be good to have. Helps with the daily walk around eye only inspections on nuts and bolts.

Nyloc nuts on the elevator counter balance weights - View Thread
If the nyloc nuts cannot be counted on to hold the lead at a constant torque, what is everyone else doing? I've not heard anyone else suggest doing the things Leland suggested, though they sound like safe ideas. Is this not a problem anyone has experienced in the real world of flying RVs?

Nyloc nuts on the elevator counter balance weights - RE: - View Thread
I used lock tight red on the nut even though it was a nyloc. The thought being that it will be there when my grandson fly's the plane. I also painted the lead to prevent metal to metal contact between to dissimilar metals.

The "cover your butt" section
This website was built to document my work on my RV-9A in compliance with the FAA requirements needed to certify my aircraft. My experiences and comments are by no means to be considered as instructions on how to build an RV-9A or any other aircraft.
